Amongst the other gemstones, diamonds are one of the most treasured because they are not just lovely looking but also durable. They are quite expensive, and for this reason a lot of people are now resorting to lab made diamonds as a means to save money.
If you would like to purchase a diamond, then you should have knowledge of lab diamonds, how they are made and why they are preferred to mined diamonds.
Lab diamonds are diamonds that were produced in a lab by scientist. During the production process, advanced technology is used to recreate the same conditions with which diamonds are naturally formed. The outcome is a diamond made by man that is exactly the same as the natural diamond.
In most cases Lad Diamonds are compared with simulated diamonds, but both are completely different. Simulated diamonds are stones that look like diamonds but doesn’t contain carbon such as, moissanite and cubic zirconia. This simply means that although simulated diamonds and lab diamonds look alike, they do not possess the same properties. The chemical and physical components of lab diamonds are the same as that of natural diamonds. Their properties are exactly the same.
Geologist are of the opinion that the popular mined diamonds were formulated deep in earth’s mantle over 542 million years ago. Before diamonds can be formed, they need high temperatures and extreme pressure and these type of conditions can only take place naturally 90 miles below the earth’s surface. On rare occasions of deep source volcanic eruptions bring forth diamonds to the surface of the earth.
So to produce lab diamonds, scientist try to recreate these exact conditions, and there are two methods used to artificially produce diamonds.
The first method is with the use of High Pressure and High Temperature. This is a procedure in which scientists place a diamond seed gotten from a natural diamond into carbon. Then it is subjected to high pressure and temperatures with the use of either a belt press, cubic press or split-sphere press. The press makes it possible for the seed to enlarge into a full-sized diamond.
The second method is called Chemical Vapor Deposition. In this procedure the scientist places the diamond into a chamber that is about 1500 degrees Fahrenheit hot. Afterwards the chamber is filled with methane or any other gas that is rich in carbon. The carbon atoms get attached to the seed and get crystallized, and the outcome is a diamond.
In recent times lab diamonds have gained popularity, as a matter of fact most people would rather go for them than the natural ones. And below are the followings reasons why;
